Writing Song Lyrics – A Guide

Authors sometimes find it really tempting to use song lyrics in a novel or story. The words of the song are just so powerful and so right that… well, they need to be there.

Depending on the song structure, the listener will then be lead to the chorus. The chorus is the emotional high point of the song. It is a section that is repeated after every verse, about three, four, or maybe more times during the whole song. The chorus sums up the entire theme of the song, and contains one of the most important lines in any contemporary song: the hook. The hook is where most songwriter’s start their process because it communicates the entire point of the song. It is a lot easier to generate ideas around the main idea than to try and complete a Dancing Feeling Reggae Picka Pow from beginning to end.

Not so fast. Actually, lyrics are really just a small part of hit songs in general. If you listen to pop music today, lyrics have become trite and meaningless for the most part, so what is the driving force?

One way it does this is with the very catchy nature of the fast, choppy delivery of the bridge melody. You can hear it starting at about 2:15. Aside from the bridge melody in itself being catchy, it also contrasts well against the much longer and more drawn out melody used in the rest of the online song.

Okay, now there is the complete song. It has three sets of different music to it. The repeating chorus has it’s own, as well as the short bridge, that wraps up the song. Those two parts of the song musically and lyrically stand alone. The three different verses also has the same music in all three verses. This is a great song to show how, though the words are different in the verses, the beat, tempo, and music is the same in each verse. You can just read each line and see how each line in each verse work together. You can also see how it flows naturally, without forcing any notes, syllables, or words. You may also notice the perfect rhyming pattern created in this song, that also flows naturally.

However, there are a couple downsides to online piano lessons. While you have some great resources and instruction, you will not receive feedback from the instructor. Some fingering techniques are more easily demonstrated in person. A teacher with a trained ear can let you know when your timing is off.

Usually, this song structure will have a lot of variation in the verse melody, since the verses repeat often. It keeps their melody from getting boring during all the repetition.

Take a listen to your favorite songs and try to pull from each what element really makes the song. Is it the singer’s voice? The drum beat? The lyrics?
